Tech Leaders Will Meet in Washinton to Discuss AI Regulations

AI has been one of the fastest-growing technologies in the past year, so much so that the government and the law are having trouble catching up when it comes to creating regulations for it. In an attempt to match the pace, tech leaders are coming together to discuss important matters regarding AI.

AI Regulations to Be Discussed

A couple of big players in the tech industry are coming together for the listening session arranged by Senator Chuck Schumer. It will be the first of many discussions that will determine how artificial intelligence will be handled and regulated from then on out.

Tech executives such as Elon Musk of Tesla, Sundar Pichai of Google, Sam Altman of OpenAI, and Satya Nadella of Microsoft will be among those who will attend. They will be accompanied by lawmakers in the meeting, which is set to take place in Washington on September 13th.

According to The New York Times, it will be a closed-door listening session where topics that will be discussed include how AI can pose a risk to jobs, spread misinformation and disinformation, and be used to steal intellectual property.

It will not be limited to the negative effects as its potential contribution to the field of research on diseases will also be discussed. Civil rights and labor groups along with the creative community members will also attend the meeting for added insights.

To paint a picture of how serious this is, the tech leaders that are attending will significantly influence the kind of regulations that agencies will impose on AI, an advanced technology that will likely be applied wherever it can be integrated in the next couple of years.

Each of the attendees has given suggestions before on how to approach the matter, but one has always opposed the other, such as Microsoft and OpenAI believing that one agency regulating AI is a good idea while Google and IBM don't.

The Importance of AI Regulation

Even in its early stages, it was already apparent that AI had a lot of potential and that it could be used for great things. However, the lack of regulation might lead to artificial intelligence being misused, which can be dangerous for a technology that's advanced.

Since the tech industry is eager to adopt AI technology into its systems, it's important to make sure that the flaws are addressed in the regulations. Even just recently, some models have been found to display evidence of bias, discrimination, and misinformation.

Another aspect, as pointed out by Emeritus, is its disruption in employment. AI is capable of doing a lot of jobs, especially those of white-collar workers. Regulations must determine the limit to which AI can be used to replace humans in the workplace.

With generative AI, it has also been proven that in the wrong hands, it can be used to impersonate another so convincingly. People with limited knowledge of the technology may have trouble discerning which are AI-generated content and which are genuine, which can create a lot of problems.
