Sony 'Amami' Xperia Z1 Mini passes through the FCC

The Sony Xperia Z1 Mini has passed through the FCC with a codename of 'Amami' with LTE bands for U.S. carriers.

Sony released the Xperia Z1F this past fall in Japan. The handset is a smaller version of the company's flagship Xperia Z1 and has been referred to as the Z1 Mini. Sony opted to pack a smaller 4.3-inch display with the same high-end specs used in the Xperia Z1, instead of offering its customers a watered down 'mini' handset like we've seen with Samsung's and HTC's release of their Galaxy S4 Mini and HTC One Mini, respectively.

When initial rumors started to leak about the smaller Xperia, Sony surprised the world by shipping the 'mini' smartphone with virtually the same specs and features of its flagship Xperia Z1, including a powerful quad-core processor and high-end 20.7-megapixel camera. The only main difference is that it's using a 4.3-inch 720p display compared to the Z1's 5-inch 1080p Full HD.

Sony smartphone fans in the U.S. will be happy to know that the Xperia Z1 Mini has just passed through the FCC and its codename of 'Amami' has been revealed along with an official model number of D5503.

According to the FCC listing, the Sony Xperia Z1 Mini will feature a 4.3-inch 720p TRILUMINOS display and will run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with the Xperia UI on top (an Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade is expected to be available soon after the handset's release). It will be powered by a 2.2Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM. Its camera capabilities are expected to include a 20.7-megapixel camera with F/2.0 Sony G Lens and a 2.2-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat.

The smartphone will include 16GB of internal storage and a microSD expansion slot that will support up to 64GB microSD cards. The handset is expected to use a non-removable 2,300 mAh battery and be IP55/IP58 certified waterproof and dust-resistant, just like Sony's current smartphones and tablets. Its dimensions are 127mm x 64.9mm x 9.4mm and it is expected to be available in a choice of black, white, pink and yellow.

Current rumors claim that Sony is expected to officially announce the U.S.-bound Xperia Z1 Mini at CES 2014 in January. Once we hear more information on Sony's uncompromising Xperia Z1 Mini, we'll be sure to update you.
