Samsung is among the leading manufacturers of smart devices, including tablets. There have been several models released in the past few years, all with their own unique features and performance qualities. The tech giant has found a way to make its tablet dust and water-resistant, all while having good performance.
Resistance to Water and Dust
It's the first time that Samsung released a tablet in its Galaxy Tab S Series that's both resistant to dust and liquids. Jingyu Hwang from the New Computing (NC) Mechanical R&D Group, was responsible for the mechanical structure and parts design of the latest tablet.
As one of the engineers behind the design, Hwang said: "Previous tablets that had water or dust resistance emphasized the physical durability of the product and focused less on the device's other specifications," according to a Samsung blog post.
Equipped with a large screen and high performance, the company boasts that users can freely enjoy the tablet anytime, anywhere with its IP68-rating certification across all models, which was set by the International Electrotechnical Commission.
Specifically, it had a dust-resistant rating of six for protection against external solid particles, while its water-resistance rating was eight, which allows the device to last up to 30 minutes underwater at a maximum depth of 1.5 meters.
Despite these features, Hwang along with Wooseok Ko from the Display Group at Samsung Electronics managed to keep the tablet thin and light. The two had to integrate new technology to make it possible.
Hwang explained that when incorporating the said features, making some parts bigger or adding new parts was inevitable. They designed a new internal structure to "house all the necessary water-resistant elements within the body," as well as developed new parts for it.
For instance, they applied silicon rubber materials to keep water from entering the speakers, all while utilizing a dispensing method, in which a urethane-based material is applied to parts and then solidified for the USB port.
More Note-Worthy Features
The Galaxy Tab S9 is equipped with Vision Booster technology, which allows the user to see the screen more clearly under harsh lighting. The technology automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen based on the lighting condition of the environment.
Ko says: "Even in situations when on-screen graphics are constantly changing, such as when playing a game or watching a movie, Vision Booster technology's advanced algorithm references the previous frames and quickly applies the same effect using specific computations."
It's not just the brightness that's adjusted but the clarity as well. The Vision Booster will also enhance the visibility of the bright and dark areas on the screen, which exceeds the already existing automatic brightness adjustment feature that Samsung has on certain smartphones.
In addition to that, the tablet comes with a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, which is usually found in Samsung laptops and its S Series line in smartphones. Ko, who was behind the display on the tablet, says that they focused on enhancing the image quality of the tablet.
