Samsung’s New ‘Galaxy AI’ Will Translate Your Calls in Real Time

Many tech companies are already taking advantage of the AI boom by integrating generative AI into their products and services, so it was only a matter of time before the tech giants who haven't, would jump into the bandwagon as well. It was long overdue, but Samsung is already utilizing AI.

Samsung's 'Galaxy AI'

It won't be as advanced as talking to your phone and letting the AI do everything for you, but Samsung is starting off by breaking down language barriers through real-time translations through its own AI model.

With what the smartphone manufacturing giant calls "a new era of Galaxy AI," upcoming Samsung smartphones will be able to translate phone calls using artificial intelligence while you speak, as reported by The Verge.

In the company's post, it says that "Galaxy AI is a comprehensive mobile AI experience, powered by both on-device AI developed at Samsung and cloud-based AI enabled by our open collaborations with like-minded industry leaders."

The translation feature will be called "AI Live Translate Call," and will be built into Samsung's devices. Since the estimated release will be early next year, the feature is expected to be included in Samsung's upcoming flagship model, which is the S24 lineup.

While it may raise concerns about security and privacy since the company will have to access certain types of data in order to translate them, Samsung assured that "it will transform your everyday mobile experience with the peace of mind you count on from Galaxy security and privacy."

Since the feature will be built-in, the audio and text translations will appear live as the user speaks, and the translations will happen on the device. It's still unclear whether this feature can be installed on older models once it has been released.

Samsung Gauss

Galaxy AI won't be the only AI feature coming to Samsung soon. Named after Carl Friedrich Gauss who was "the legendary mathematician who established normal distribution theory, the backbone of machine learning and AI," more convenient features will be released.

For one, Samsung Gauss Language can be used to compose emails, along with translating content as well. It will be used to "enhance the consumer experience by enabling smarter device control when integrated into products," as reported by CNBC.

The AI model is already being used by Samsung employees. It helps with productivity as it can help write code faster and generate or edit images through Samsung Gauss Image. The company did not provide a timeline, but they did state that it will be launched in the near future.

With this announcement, Samsung might be able to beat its biggest competitor, Apple, in releasing AI in its devices. However, Apple should not be dismissed too quickly, as the company is already working on its own AI model as well.

Reports say that Apple has already spent a lot of money to train its AI, and based on the technology that Apple has released over the years, people can expect that its AI features won't be something you can brush off.
