Finnish tech startup company, Varjo, recently announced its mixed-reality headset XR-4 that will be available in December for industrial use.
Varjo XR-4's Similarity to Consumer-Based Headsets
The new headset, whose price starts at $3,990, offers a similar yet more professional usage. Unlike consumer-based mixed reality headsets in the market, Varjo XR-4 is designed to cater to enterprise use cases.
The XR-4 headset features two 4K displays with a 50% wider field of view compared to former models. It also comes with a brighter display and more vibrant color. The device also has two 20MP cameras on the front which makes the mixed reality a possibility, bearing some similarity with Apple's Vision Pro and Meta Quest headset.
"We now have one screen per eye which has pushed the resolution right to the limits of that screen, so taking out some costs that way. But most importantly, it's just a question about scale," chief product officer Patrick Wyatt shared with CNBC.
Varjo XR-4 Features
The Varjo XR-4 works with a workstation in order for the software to work. The new headset is bundled with controllers that are co-developed by Razer. The outer cameras are also now capable of doing a full motion six degrees of freedom tracking without any external Stream VR base stations.
Varjo's hardware and software are known to be used for training and designing. Volvo, one of the company's clients, has been using its devices to design cars. Meanwhile, it can also create flight simulators with the US Department of Defense.
The regular XR-4 costs $3,990 while the auto-focus Focal Edition is priced at 9,990. The PC needed to run the headset is also sold separately. Although the device seems expensive, Varjo emphasized that the device is meant to be bought by businesses.
