Amazon filed a motion in the Western Washington district to appeal the dismissal of the antitrust lawsuit submitted by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and 17 state attorneys general.
Amazon Argues Lack of Evidence
Last September, the FTC and 17 state attorneys general filed a lawsuit against Amazon after alleged monopolistic practices that cut off competition within the market.
Moreover, the e-commerce giant allegedly punishes sellers that offer better deals, making it more difficult for customers to purchase products outside the Amazon brand.
However, the company argued that the FTC failed to provide enough evidence that prove its claims such as driving up prices or harming consumers.
According to Amazon attorney Heidi Hubbard, the lawsuit "implausibly, and illogically, assumes that Amazon's efforts to keep featured prices low on Amazon somehow raised consumer prices across the whole economy."
Amazon vs. FTC
The FTC emphasized at the filing that the lawsuit is needed to restore the competition in the market. Moreover, the consumers will benefit the most if the case is won as they can finally show lower prices and better quality items.
The battle between Amazon and FTC has been ongoing for years. The commission has been investigating the e-commerce giant for its alleged anticompetitive conduct. Previously, Amazon faced a lawsuit on the Ring doorbells and Alexa speakers, the case was then settled with a $30.8 million payment.
The ongoing antitrust lawsuit of the company marked its fourth investigation this year.
