A lot of people enjoy horror movies, some for the adrenaline and others out of interest for the lore of the film. The more hardcore horror enthusiasts tend to look for films that will get them thinking for days. For a truly scary experience, you should look into titles that were based on real events. Here are some.
1. 'Annabelle'
Horror themes have a lot of symbols like clowns, poltergeists, possessions, and so on. In the last decades, dolls have also become a vessel for evil in some movies, such as the famous "Chucky." Although, unlike Chucky, the red-haired doll Annabelle can be more terrifying.
That's mainly because the movie with the titular character (or object) is based on an actual doll. The figure in the movie isn't what Annabelle looks like since she was a Raggedy Ann Doll, but anyone would rather choose a creepy porcelain doll over a fluffy but possessed one.

2. 'The Amityville Horror'
The movie also serves as a psychological horror, especially since it involves people whom you live closely with. The story revolves around George and Kathy Lutz, along with their three children moving into a new house. Little did they know that it was the house where a gruesome crime happened.
The events in the movie were set after the true crime involving Ronald DeFeo Jr., who murdered his own family in the same house back in 1974, and claimed that the voices in the house told him to. The movie then progresses to George hearing and being influenced by those very same voices.

3. 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose'
This movie can be quite unsettling even for those who enjoy hardcore horror movies. It was based on the experience of a real girl called Anneliese Michel, who showed peculiar symptoms that appeared to be those of a possessed person.
Even the history of the family is eerie enough to make you believe that perhaps, it might actually all be real. Michel was given the fictional name of Emily Rose in the movie but showed the same harrowing state the girl was in. In the end, she was malnourished and had self-inflicted wounds.

4. 'The Haunting in Connecticut'
Another story that tells you to be careful where you move into. The story revolves around the Snedeker family, who were then portrayed as the Campbell family in the film. Following the movie's story, they moved to a new home to be closer to the hospital for their son's cancer treatments.
They then learned that the house was previously a funeral home and that it was run by someone who practices necromancy to control the dead. The movie has been questioned about its authenticity and how accurate it was with the actual events, but it's horrific nonetheless.

5. 'The Fourth Kind'
While the others on the list are more paranormal in nature, this film is more extraterrestrial. Regardless, it will have you questioning reality and fearing for what you would do if it happened to you. There have been real reports of disappearance in the place where it took place, which is Alaska.
Psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler documented her sessions with patients, which is why the movie also shows real footage side-by-side with the filmed version. What's more haunting is that Dr. Tyler experienced these herself, and even lost a child in the process.
