Red Nexus 5 coming to Google Play on Feb. 4?

Rumors of bright new colors coming to the Nexus 5 are intensifying and a Sprint document now claims a red version of the smartphone will arrive on Feb. 4.

Apple has been setting trends in the smartphone world ever since it debuted the original iPhone in 2007. The company broke from tradition and launched two new iPhones last year - the flagship iPhone 5s and a less expensive option, the iPhone 5c. Like Apple's design aesthetics for its aging iPod line, it offered the iPhone 5c in bright eye-catching colors. Consumers seem to like the new color options and Apple credited sales of the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s for helping the company have a record breaking fourth quarter with sales of 51 million iPhones.

We heard a rumor recently that claimed Google would also be adding some bright colors to its Nexus 5 lineup, beyond the original black and white models. The new color options reported were red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. It appears that Google might be rolling out one color at a time. A new report claims that the red Nexus 5 will be added to the Google Play Store very shortly.

Android Police received a tip that included an image of Sprint's internal documentation informing employees that a red Nexus 5 will be available in the Google Play store on Feb. 4.

As a reminder, the Nexus 5 features a 4.95-inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD Corning Gorilla Glass 3 display with a pixel density of 445 pixels-per-inch (ppi) and ships with the latest version Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. The handset is powered by a 2.26GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, an Adreno 330 graphics processing unit (GPU) and 2GB of RAM to provide a fast and fluid user interface.

The Nexus 5's camera capabilities include an 8-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and improved HDR+ mode, and a front facing 1.3-megapixel camera for video chat and selfies. The smartphone's wireless connectivity options consist of a 4G LTE radio, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0 with Bluetooth LE abilities, NFC, and GPS. Google has included a 2,300 mAh non-removable battery, which it claims will provide up to 13 hours of talk time. The handset is available in both a 16GB model and 32GB configuration. The Nexus 5 also includes support for wireless charging out of the box, although you'll have to get a wireless charging pad to enjoy that feature. The smartphone is 69.17mm wide, 137.84mm tall, and 8.59mm thick and weighs in at 130g.

Google hasn't confirmed that it will offer the Nexus 5 in new colors, so we'll have to wait for an official word in the next few days. The 16GB Nexus 5 retails for $349 and the 32GB model sells for $399, with only black or white color options available for now.
