In an apparent tease that it will indeed be launching an Android smartphone, Nokia has briefly changed the colors of its Facebook and Twitter page to green.
Up until a few months ago, if you asked anyone if Nokia would make an Android smartphone the answer would have most likely been a resounding no. The company famously bet its life on adopting Microsoft's Windows Phone as its single smartphone OS strategy after abandoning its previous operating system. Nokia is widely expected to do what many thought would never happen, i.e. launch its first Android smartphone later this month at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Nokia and Microsoft, now the owner of Nokia, have kept quiet about whether the company will launch an Android smartphone and use something besides Microsoft's OS to power its smartphones. Nokia seems to be teasing the world, indicating that the rumors are true and it will indeed launch an Android smartphone. The company has reportedly given Google's little green mascot a shout out by changing both its Facebook and Twitter pages to green in a nod to the popular green droid. Nokia has since returned the pages to its signature blue color, but CNET has images to show the proof.
The smartphone has been going by the codename of 'Normandy' for months and has recently been said to officially launch as the Nokia X. The handset is expected to be part of Nokia's low-end and entry-level smartphones for developing markets.
The Nokia X, or Normandy, is expected to feature a 4-inch display with a resolution of 854 x 480 and be powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The device is also expected to offer dual-SIM support, pack in a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat and selfies. Recently, leaked images of the Nokia X have also shown that the smartphone will have a single "back" button gracing its display, in a similar position to the "Windows" button on the company's Lumia smartphones.
We'll have to wait for Nokia to make all this talk of Android official, however. The green teaser on its Facebook and Twitter page are nice hints, but no confirmation. We'll bring you more information from Nokia's event at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014 as soon as it happens, so stay tuned.
