A recent survey from the Pew Research Center revealed that YouTube and Facebook have retained their dominance as social media apps from the last 2021 poll.
Meanwhile, TikTok remained the fastest-growing platform with more than one-third of the surveyed adults stating that they have the app.
YouTube Dominates Social Media Usage
The survey was conducted between May 19 and September 5, 2023, gathering data from 5,733 adults in the U.S. The result showed that 83% of the respondents are users of YouTube, followed by 68% for Facebook.
In addition, 93% of 18 to 29 years old respondents have stated to use the video platform while only 60% of those 65 and older have stated the same. Regardless, Facebook and YouTube are popular across age demographics.
Another Meta platform took third place with 47% of respondents stating that they use Instagram. Pinterest, TikTok, Linkedin, WhatsApp, and Snapchat followed the ranking respectively with around 27 to 35 percent of users.
TikTok Boosts Popularity From 2021
On the other hand, TikTok had skyrocketed its popularity within two years. The video-sharing platform increased its popularity by up to 12 points compared to its ranking in 2021.
Meanwhile, X users have significantly dropped within two years. One of the main reasons is the changes to its name and some of its policies. Pew Research Center revealed that the platform dropped from 23 percent in 2021.
Apart from usage percentage, several platforms showed significant differences in users' age range. This includes Instagram and Snapchat which are both popular for users under 29 years of age but is less known for 65 and older people.
