Taylor Swift's attorney sent a cease-and-desist letter to a college student, Jack Sweeney, who is known for tracking and sharing publicly available information about private jet landings and takeoffs.
The college student has been posting on his social media accounts and attracted the attention of celebrities and billionaires.
Taylor Swift's Team Warns Legal Action Against Jet Tracker
Sweeney is currently a junior at the University of Central Florida and has been taking logs of takeoff and landings of planes and helicopters owned by various billionaires and other public figures. Along with the information he also shares the estimated planet-warming emissions of each flight.
Last December, Swift's attorney sent Sweeney a cease-and-desist order, warning the student that Swift would be pursuing any and all legal remedies if he did not stop his "stalking and harassing behavior."
According to the letter, Sweeney's sharing of information online had heightened the pop star's "fear for her personal safety." Moreover, the letter also addressed that it is causing Swift's family to have emotional and physical distress.
Jet Tracker Student Defends Intention
In a response to The Verge, Sweeney stated that he had no intention to harm the celebrity. However, he does believe in transparency and public information.
According to Sweeney, he saw the letter as an attempt to stop him from sharing public data. Moreover, the letter was sent after Swift faced criticism for her flight's environmental effect.
"Her team thinks they can control the world," he added.
Various celebrities, politicians, and billionaires have been facing criticism for their private jet flight consumption, highlighting its impact on climate change. As for Swift, her team explained that she had more than double the "carbon credits" that offset her travel before she began touring.
