It's always important to watch what you say on social media, especially if you're a known individual who may face consequences for saying the wrong things. Such is the predicament of Gina Carano who was fired for her opinions on social media. No worries, Elon Musk is coming to the rescue.
Help from a Kindred Spirit
If anyone knows the sting of a controversial statement making things complicated, it would be Elon Musk. Now that another person is experiencing the same thing, the tech billionaire plans to help out who he believes is a victim of bullying, harassment, or discrimination.
Gina Carano, the actress who plays Cara Dune on "The Mandalorian" was fired by Lucasfilms due to her "social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities," most of which were posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Since the X owner is a firm believer in free speech, a belief that repeatedly hurt the social media platform, he will be funding Carano's lawsuit against the studio. The lawsuit's end goal would be to have the actress get recast for her role, as well as get paid for punitive damages.
Head of business operations at X, Joe Benarroch said that as a sign of the company's commitment to free speech, they are "proud to provide financial support for Gina Carano's lawsuit, empowering her to seek vindication of her free speech rights on X.
As for the statement that got Carano fired, it was reported that she shared and deleted a story on her Instagram account that was antisemitic, but it only served as a final nail in the coffin of her employment as there were many other instances.
According to Kotaku, the actress had also posted other insensitive statements prior to the antisemitic post such as the mockery of face mask mandates, the spread of conspiracies about the US election, and liking posts that are against the Black Lives Matter movement.
While that's the reason Lucasfilms provided regarding her dismissal from the role, Carano claims that they did so only because she was a woman. She expressed that her male co-stars made similar offensive posts but remained on the show.
"Some of us have been unjustly singled out, harassed, persecuted and had our livelihoods stripped away because we dared to encourage conversation, asked questions, and refused to go along with the mob," the actress expressed.
Elon Musk on the Same Boat
The situation is all too familiar for the tech billionaire as he has also experienced consequences for expressing his opinions on his own platform. Even the premise of the posts is somewhat similar as Elon Musk is accused of being antisemitic as well.
An X user posted an antisemitic conspiracy theory stating that Jewish communities were pushing "hatred against whites, and the X owner replied strongly implying that he agreed. Unfortunately for Musk, the consequence was not just unemployment.
His comment led to several advertisers leaving the platform, including Disney, Apple, IBM, Warner Bros. Discovery, Microsoft, and many more, and this was already in addition to other advertisers who had left earlier for a different issue involving Musk.
