The flagship show "How I Met Your Mother" gathered so many fans internationally that Hulu decided it might be a good idea to create a spin-off. Titled "How I Met Your Father," the show was not received as well as the execs expected, and even though its fans want the show to continue, it's almost a guarantee that it won't be the case.
'How I Met Your Father' Will Remain Unfinished
When the show was first announced and mentioned that Hilary Duff would be the lead actress in the show, fans of "How I Met Your Mother" had high hopes for the show and were excited about the release. With the current numbers, it seems like the spin-off did not live up to expectations.
The show managed to go on for two seasons before Hulu officially announced that the show had been canceled. Those who actually enjoyed the show were waiting for news about its revival, but a response has been given that doesn't exactly inspire optimism.
Disney Television Executive Craig Erwich said that they "don't have any news to share about that right now," as mentioned in Screen Rant. The news about the show's cancellation broke in early September 2023, so not having any news to share about the show might mean bad news.
This means that like many short-lived shows, there will be many unanswered questions and unresolved plot points in the series. The biggest mystery would be who the father is, of course. The base show revealed who the mother was by the end of the eighth season.
Seeing as "How I Met Your Father" ended by the second season, there's a very good chance that the actor for the father was not even introduced yet. It's sad to see the show go, especially since we haven't seen all of the original gang show up yet.
Some theorized that the father is already in the show, particularly Sid, and the speculation went viral. However, that's all it will ever be, speculation, especially if the show will no longer be continued or until the showrunners reveal who it really is.
So far, the only appearances that the show had were that of Robin Scherbatzky and Barney Stinson, showing what their lives were like after the events of "How I Met Your Mother." We have yet to see others like Ted Mosby, Lily Aldrin, and Marshall Eriksen.
Why The Show Didn't Make It
The ratings for the show are 36% for season one and 33% for season two. Both critics and viewers of the show have called it unfunny and dull compared to the show it was based on, which explains why it has such low ratings.
It doesn't help that fans of the base series are already unhappy with the fact that a spin-off was being created, so it's unclear whether the ratings are already biased in the first place or if the show really was that bad.
According to Distractify, some of the reviews say that the gags are "uniformly lifeless," while another said that it had "an absence where interesting characters or relatable scenarios or effective attempts at wit and charm should be."
