Signal is beta testing its new security feature that will allow users to keep their phone numbers private while chatting by using usernames.
Instead of sharing phone numbers, Signal is enabling the exchange of usernames for people who want to converse with each other. However, the phone number is still required upon registering for the app.

Signal Beta Tests Username Feature for Privacy
Signal is one of the trusted end-to-end encrypted messaging apps out there. However, up until now, the app requires the exchange of phone numbers in order to start a conversation.
By allowing usernames, Signal is resolving its privacy loophole. It also decreases the chances of giving hackers an entire access to the victim's messages.
However, Signal explained that the usernames on the app do not function like on social media platforms. "[It] is not the profile name that's displayed in chats, it's not a permanent handle, and not visible to the people you are chatting with in Signal."
A username is only used to initiate contact on the app without sharing a phone number. Hence, people who wish to start a conversation together must have the other person's exact unique username if they don't have their number.
Signal Tightens Security Features
In addition, Signal debuted a new default which assured users that their phone number would no longer be visible to everyone at the app. Instead, people who saved the user's number on their contacts are only entitled to see their numbers.
Currently, the new security features are available in beta but Signal confirmed that it will start rolling out to everyone in the coming weeks. Moreover, users are encouraged to update their app to start taking advantage of the new security measures.
Signal also reminded users that all of the updates are purely optional. Users can still change their visibility based on their preferences. It is also not required to create a username but rather an alternative only.
