The medical drama has amassed such a huge fanbase, and when you ask them which death was the saddest, they would all have different answers. Among all the characters who have departed the show, here are the most tragic exits:
1. Bonnie Crasnoff
Despite being featured in just one episode, Bonnie was close to many fans' hearts thanks to her kind disposition despite the situation she was in (she had a rod through her). Between her and Tom, the doctors could only save one, and the latter had a greater chance of surviving. Ultimately, fans had to say goodbye to the character.
2. Mary Portman
Played by Mandy Moore, fans got to see Mary survive one of the most traumatizing episodes on "Grey's Anatomy," which was the mass shooting in the hospital. She eventually returned to the facility for a simple procedure, so imagine how heavy it was for fans to learn that she did not make after her colostomy removal.
3. Denny Duquette
Many fans found Denny charming, with some even rooting for him and Izzie. The episode where the gang violated so many rules just to give him the procedure he needed to live was nerve-racking, but viewers were glad to see that he survived. Of course, that relief was short-lived since he died of a stroke not long after.
4. Henry Burton
Yet another guest character who fans loved because of his personality, Henry eventually became the love interest of Teddy Altman. What made the situation worse was that through no fault of hers, he died under Cristina's blade. Teddy was wrecked and Cristina was burdened by guilt, and fans lost a character they grew to adore.
5. Adele Webber
Just like Meredith's mother, Adele's mind was slowly consumed by Alzheimer's disease. Throughout her sickness, she was constantly confused and relived the painful moments of her marriage when she knew that Richard Webber was cheating on her. Despite this, we sympathized with the chief as he loved Adele regardless.
6. Lexie Grey
Perhaps one of the most brutal deaths other than George's, Lexie was one of the casualties of the plane crash in the eighth season. She was pinned by debris from the plane, and her injuries were too extensive. Meredith didn't have the chance to say goodbye to her as Lexie died before the former arrived, which made it all the more painful.
7. Mark Sloan
The showrunners seem to enjoy toying with their viewer's feelings. Just as we thought that Mark Sloan survived the harrowing plane crash that left everyone traumatized, he ended up in a coma and died. That pain was amplified knowing that fans had already lost Lexie Grey, and that Mark would be leaving his daughter Sofia behind.
8. Derek Shepherd
The showrunners dragged Meredith and Derek's love story out, but fans finally saw them happy together. They had a daughter, Zola, and lived in the house that the two had envisioned. Unfortunately, no one was getting a happy ending, not even Meredith. Derek was killed when he was treated by incompetent doctors following a car crash. Fans later learned that Meredith was pregnant with Derek's child.
