Since the emergence of AI tools, the technology has been integrated into many devices and functions, so it makes sense that artificial intelligence is making its way to smartphones. As brands work to develop systems that utilize AI, Apple might turn to Google for its Gemini AI model.
Apple x Google
It has been reported that Apple is already in talks with Google to license its most powerful large language model yet, Gemini. The goal is for it to power Apple's AI features like Siri upcoming iPhone feature updates that will arrive within the year.
With AI capabilities on the horizon, Apple will just boost the iPhone's functions further than simple commands to its virtual assistant. The tech giant could develop features such as image generation, text generation, and other capabilities through text or voice prompts.
For now, Gemini's integration into iOS 18 is simply a rumor that the company is yet to confirm. The likely date for that would be during Apple's upcoming event, the annual Worldwide Developers Conference, which takes place in June.
The collaboration might stem from the company's frustration in developing its own AI model. Even as a tech giant, Apple appears to be falling behind in the AI race. Even its main competitor, Samsung, already has impressive AI features with its Galaxy AI.
According to Ars Technica, Apple has been developing what is codenamed Ajax, a large language model that's supposed to power Apple's AI features, including the rumored chatbot Apple GPT. However, with its current progress, an established AI model might be the better option.
The partnership will be beneficial to both companies, especially since Apple and Google already have an existing relationship with the latter's search engine being the default option for the iPhone maker's devices.
However, Google might not be the only one in the running in powering Apple's potential AI features. According to sources, the tech giant is also considering OpenAI as a partner with its GPT models, given that its largest AI models are on par, if not better, than Google's Gemini.
Catching Up with Galaxy AI
Apple already has an idea of what it has to compete with, especially with the release of Galaxy AI to certain Samsung flagships. The features it offers alone can already serve as the selling point for Samsung's current-generation and next-generation models.
One of the mentioned features is the Circle to Search, wherein a user can encircle items from a photo, and the AI will automatically conduct a search on Google for results. There's also Live Translate which works for both calls and texts in real time, breaking down language barriers and is useful during travel.
Note Assist allows the users to highlight texts and ask the AI to summarize them and make them easier to understand. Lastly, one of the best features would be the Generative Edit. It lets users resize, retouch, and relocate objects within a photo, at the same time filling in the empty spaces where it was taken from.
