At this point, finding new AI features in apps, sites, and services is no longer surprising. With more companies adopting AI functions, it's expected that others will follow suit. Just recently, eBay has also resorted to using AI for product recommendations.
eBay's 'Shop the Look'
Using generative AI, shoppers will be able to see slides of images that show the products worn by a model. There will be hotpots on each of the products for the customers to tap on, all of which are based on their shopping experiences.
The "shop the look" section is only available in the iOS mobile app for now. The company says that the recommendations are personalized and will become more so as the customers continue to shop for items, as reported by Tech Crunch.
As for the products on the image, the user can tap on the points indicating the product and similar items and outfits will come up, all of which are intended to match the style of the shopper as well as the items they already bought.
The feature will only work if the user has viewed at least 10 fashion items in the last 180 days. To view the recommendations from the AI, they can open eBay's home page or the fashion landing page.
eBay is using its own AI model called eBay.ai, which was developed with the company's team and RAI principles. With the use of the tool, the online marketplace might be able to encourage shoppers to look for more items to buy, resulting in more sales.
The company will likely expand on this feature in the future. eBay said that they intend to explore the application of the feature to other categories, as well as add more personalized functions to the feature in the next year.
AI in Fashion
eBay is not the first to incorporate the use of AI in picking out the best clothes to shop for. Google is also using AI to help shoppers determine which products would be the best fit for them as they can virtually "try on" the clothes.
One of the disadvantages of shopping online is that you won't get to see how the clothes would fit you, which is why having a model with the same build is the next best thing. Using Google's generative AI model, you can see the clothes on a range of people in sizes XXS to 4XL.
The models will vary in body shape, ethnicity, hair type, and skin tone, all of which are important factors when choosing the best thing to wear. The clothes will look as natural as they can as well with the help of AI.
The clothing would also reflect how it would drape, fold, cling, stretch, and form wrinkles when they are worn by the model of choice. There are only select brands that have the option such as Anthropologie, Everlane, H&M, and LOFT.
All a user has to do is tap the "Try On" badge on Search and select the appropriate model that reflects them most. For now, the feature is only available for US users, but Google is expected to roll it out to other countries soon.
