The NBA has permanently banned Toronto Raptors' forward Jontay Porter from playing after violating the league's rules on gambling.
The investigation found that Porter has been disclosing confidential information to sports bettors and limiting his own participation for betting purposes on NBA games.
NBA Finds Raptors Forward Guilty of Gambling Violation
In a press release, the NBA detailed that Porter shared confidential information about his health status before the Raptors' March 20 game. The details were disclosed to an NBA bettor.
"Another individual with whom Porter associated and knew to be an NBA bettor subsequently placed an $80,000 parlay proposition bet with an online sports book, to win $1.1 million, wagering that Porter would underperform in the March 20 game," the league reported.
Porter was also found guilty of limiting his game participation to make the expected outcome on his performance in at least one game. On March 20, he played for three minutes after claiming that he felt ill. His suspicious activities brought the NBA's attention which led to an investigation.
NBA Reveals Porter's Participation in Online Betting
From January to March, Porter has reportedly placed at least 13 bets on NBA games through an associate's online betting account. The bets ranged from $15 to $22,000 and totaled $54,094.
Although none of his bets involved any game that he was directly involved in, three of the bets were multi-game parlay bets that included one Raptors game; Porter paid that his team would lose but all these bets were lost.
"There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter's blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment," said Adam Silver, NBA commissioner.
