Certain streamers ask their viewers to do bizarre things and since their followers want to be noticed, they do it no matter how insane it might be. Fans thought they were being asked by streamer Adin Ross, but it turns out that they were tricked by another content creator using generative AI.
Adin Ross Fans Break Ther TVs
Streamer Adin Ross is known for daring his followers to do things like smashing their TVs, and the fans usually do it not only because they look up to the content creator, but because Ross usually rewards those who fulfill the dares.
This time around, there will be no rewards to speak of because it was not Ross who issued the tasks. Instead, a TikToker who goes by JohnJam11703 posted clips of an AI-generated Adin Ross, which asked fans to break their tech devices.
The generated deepfake was convincing enough to fool a few takers. One kid threw their PS4 out of their window after being promised a new TV and a PlayStation 5. Another one punched and broke their TV in exchange for $500, as reported by Gizmodo.
One of the biggest promised rewards was a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and $20,000, given that the kid put a hole in their wall. The kid even asked permission from their mom, to which she agreed. It's safe to say that the kid did not get anything for it.
JohnJam11703 used several AI tools to create the convincing deepfake of Adin Ross such as the AI repository Hugging Face, the random video chat app Monkey, and archived videos from Ross' Kick streams.
Some found the kids' gullibility funny while others said that the act was cruel, especially since young viewers don't usually know any better. On top of the rewards they get from doing the dares, they just wanted to be noticed by a streamer they looked up to. Of course, it wasn't Adin Ross after all.
The real Ross hasn't addressed the matter of the impostor tricking his fans. There are several actions that can be taken, especially since the TikToker used his likeness without permission, even adding the promise of compensation for completing dares.
Watching Out for Deepfakes
This is not the first time a well-known personality's likeness was used to create deepfakes, making claims or statements. A lot of Hollywood celebrities have been victims of this as well, and some of them even went with legal action to counter them.
"Forrest Gump" actor Tom Hanks had his likeness used to promote a dental ad, to which Hanks clarified was not him, and that he has no affiliation with the service mentioned. He posted his concerns on Instagram along with the deepfake video.
As reported by Tech Crunch, there have also been deepfakes of MrBeast that circulated TikTok back in October 2023. It offered 10,000 viewers a chance to buy an iPhone 15 Pro for just $2. Like in Adin Ross' case, it was believable since it was something that MrBeast tends to do.
