Vaccine Maker Moderna Partners with OpenAI to Enhance Operations

News of companies integrating AI functions in their operations is more expected now than surprising. The latest to join the AI train is well-known COVID-19 vaccine maker Moderna, with the company CEO excited about AI applications and how they can help with the business.

Modena Uses AI

Artificial intelligence is making its way into the medical field, and it could be of great assistance when it comes to streamlining the development of certain projects. Moderna, for instance, will be using OpenAI's technology for its legal, research, and manufacturing teams.

All of the mentioned departments will have access to ChatGPT Enterprise, and it is expected to help launch 15 new products in the next five years and exceed expectations. The company already has existing plans for new drugs that can help patients.

Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel detailed how the vaccine maker plans to move beyond COVID-19 vaccines and produce mRNA medicines that can prevent similar viruses and treat cancer, as reported by Gizmodo.

"Just as the introduction of the personal computer in the 1980s changed the way we work and live, AI is on a path to completely transform our everyday lives," Bancel stated, adding that OpenAI is helping to lead the way.

"Moderna has an ambitious plan to launch multiple products over the next few years, and collaborations with companies like OpenAI are critical to our ability to scale and maximize our impact on patients."

So far, there have already been 750 GPTs deployed by the company which has various applications such as automating business, selecting doses for clinical trials, and more. That's besides the chatbot that Moderna launched called mChat.

Bancel has been using ChatGPT since it was released back in 2022, even suggesting that Modera employees should use the chatbot no less than 20 times a day. The chief executive said that the employees are excited about the use of an AI chatbot for work as well.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared his thoughts regarding the partnership, saying that the company looks forward to "forward to continuing to collaborate with Moderna to bring a new generation of medicines to patients in need."

AI is Not Advanced Enough to Be a Doctor

With AI entering the medical field, medical practitioners might start being concerned about AI technology taking over their jobs. However, that's still not the case and might not be for several years still. In early 2024, research groups found that ChatGPT still has a high error rate in certain fields.

Presented with 100 complex pediatric cases between 2013 to 2024, Ars Technica reported that OpenAI's GPT-4 was terrible at diagnosing pediatric cases with an 83% error rate. This can be due to the fact that children have a harder time communicating their symptoms.

Without all the information, it will be more difficult for doctors to diagnose their condition, and the same goes for AI models that check their data for potential cases. For now, AI still has a long way to go in terms of development before it is widely used in the medical field.
