5 Horror Movies That Don’t Have Jumpscares

Horror is a fascinating genre for films. It reaches into your fears and for an hour or two, you experience them as you watch events unfold. For some, jump scares are part of the fun, but not everyone enjoys jumping up their seat from being startled half to death. If you're one of them, then here are films you might enjoy.

1. 'Hereditary'

You know a horror film is good when you can still feel your skin crawl hours after you watch it, and that's what "Hereditary" brings you. It's terrifying to think about hauntings you cannot escape, especially if you're cursed to live with it because of your ancestry.

What starts as a tragic event of losing a mother becomes an ominous series of events after the protagonist and her family start experiencing unusual occurrences. Instead of jump scares, the film scares you in a slow burn, not knowing what becomes of the family.

2. 'Vivarium'

Vertigo Films

A boring suburban life is probably the least scariest setting one can be in. Everything is mostly neutral, but that's what makes the film somewhat bone-chilling. Imagine being placed into a monotonous life only to find out that you have no other choice but to live it.

A couple is led by a real estate agent into a suburb where you won't even be able to tell where your house is because they are all identical. You are not allowed to leave and even if you try, you will just be lost until you end up back at your house again and again.

3. 'The Shining'

The Shining
Warner Bros. Pictures

This list would not be complete without mentioning one of the most popular horror films of all time. When you arrive at a remote and unfamiliar place, the last thing you want is for everything to go sideways such as your father having a possessed-like meltdown.

On the bright side, they are at a hotel and there are countless rooms they can run to or hide in, as long as they steer clear of Room 237. There's also the possibility of encountering creepy twins who talk in unison, but that's small potatoes compared to a dad who is out to kill them.

The 1600s are famed for its abundance of witch-related stories. "The Witch" is yet another title that brings history into the present with a couple of twists. As a family of Puritans, they were shunned by their peers and banished from the settlement over religious disagreements.

After putting down roots near a secluded forest, the family starts to experience losses, one after another, all of which are blamed on witches and their practices. What's terrifying is that they are right, and that no amount of grief or faith will save them from what's coming.

Yet another witch-themed story, this one is set in the present when it was released in 1999. Following three film students, they venture into the forest to create a documentary about the mythical Blair Witch, which the locals were afraid of and warned them about.

Not willing to back out, the trio continue their mission to learn more about the myth. Unsurprisingly, they start to experience eerie occurrences like hearing branches snap in the middle of the night, and even children laughing from a distance. It only gets significantly worse from there.
