Google is Adding Streaming Apps to Its Infotainment Platforms

If you ever get bored during congested traffic and you have an infotainment system running native Android software, you'll have plenty of things to keep you occupied. In addition to other apps, Google is adding streaming services and a familiar game to your infotainment system.

Google Adds Max, Peacock, and Angry Birds

Getting stuck in traffic can be the worst thing for drivers, not only because it could cause you to be late to work, but also because there's not much to do as you sit inside a vehicle. While a smartphone can do the same, it's nice to have the option to turn to your car system to kill time.

Google just announced that two streaming services are coming to cars with the native Android software built in. Drivers will now have access to Max and Peacock while they are parked, as well as Angry Birds if watching video content isn't as appealing at the moment.

Several models from manufacturers like  Renault, Polestar, and Volvo will have the new feature. Unfortunately, not all cars with built-in Google will have it, such as Ford, Acura, and Honda, as reported by The Verge, although the company might add support for them soon.

Rivian vehicle owners will now be able to have their pick in streaming services on their phones, as phone mirroring will soon be possible with the new Google Cast feature. Previously unsupported, Rivian used to only have native support for Google Maps to use for navigation.

"If you don't already offer casting in your app, this is a simple way for your content to reach new audiences in the car," Google stated. The feature is already available for certain infotainment systems with Google built into the system.

Furthermore, Android Auto users can now mirror their phones on the vehicle's screen to add the Uber app. Drivers have been using their smartphones with no problems, but having a bigger screen for navigation could be a good change.

Perks of Google Built-In

The Google built-in feature comes with a lot more than just streaming content and playing Angry Birds to pass the time. There are several other functions that can make for a smoother drive with the help of a virtual assistant.

Since the system will already come with Google Maps, drivers can now use it to navigate instead of opening an app on their phone. It even has sub-functions like rerouting its users based on the latest traffic updates.

For EV drivers, Google Maps will factor in locations for EV chargers, planning the most efficient route and showing charging speeds and payment options as well. Since it has voice control, drivers won't have to look away from the road.

Just start the command with "Hey Google," and the infotainment will do the rest. Drivers can ask about locations for food, refueling, and other destinations. It's even possible to change the temperature of the car through voice control.

With connectivity, the smart infotainment system can be linked to smart home devices, allowing the driver to turn on appliances and utilities before they arrive home such as adjusting the thermostat or turning on the lights.
