Sony Music Group sent a warning notice to more than 700 tech companies and streaming services for alleged unauthorized usage of its content to train AI models.
The music company revealed that several tech companies have been using their entertainment content to train AI without any permission.
Sony Wants 'Appropriate Compensation' for Training AI Models
In a letter that was obtained by TechCrunch, Sony shared that while the company acknowledges the potential of AI, the unauthorized use of their content to train, develop, and commercialize be given "appropriate compensation."
Moreover, the company emphasized that the unauthorized usage deprives them and their artists of control of their creation.
"Evolutions in technology have frequently shifted the course of creative industries. AI will likely continue that long-standing trend. However, that innovation must ensure that songwriters' and recording artists' rights, including copyrights, are respected," the company wrote in a statement.
Sony is now seeking protection for its intellectual property from audio, audiovisual recordings, metadata, lyrics, artworks, and more.
Sony Music Demands Companies Explanation
The music company did not disclose which tech and streaming companies have violated their policy. However, Sony is requiring them to give the full details on what Sony Music songs were used to train AI models.
In addition, the companies must also explain how they accessed the content, how many copies were used, and if there are copies why did they have to create copies in the first place. Sony gave a deadline for the companies to respond.
If the tech companies fail to respond appropriately, the music group is willing to enforce its copyright and fight according to the applicable law in all jurisdictions.
Sony Music Group is home to popular artists like Celine Dion, Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Adele, and more.
