Microsoft Copilot will reportedly "remember" everything people see in their computers in the AI's latest set of features for the Windows-integrated system.
The tech giant introduced on Monday "Recall," an AI-powered feature capable of remembering everything the users have "seen or done on your PC."
Touted to be similar to "having a photographic memory," the AI will be able to provide the exact chat log, tab, or webpage previously accessed based on a few prompts alone.
The AI-powered tool will provide a timeline of all the websites, apps, and files the user has accessed via screenshots, complete with AI-powered suggested actions.
Security Concerns for Copilot 'Recall' Feature
As with most AI technology, the "Recall" tool will require large amounts of data from the user to remember all of their PC activities.
While handy in theory, the feature presents a plethora of safety and security issues to customers.
It can be remembered that a recent data breach on the company has exposed its source code, allowing hackers to essentially target almost all Microsoft clients and customers using the company's own data.
The US Cyber Safety Review Board later slammed Microsoft for letting a "preventable" incident happen. The board urged Microsoft to "develop and publicly share a plan with specific timelines to make fundamental, security-focused reforms across the company."
Following the CSRB's statement, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been reported to put cybersecurity as the company's "No. 1 priority."
To assure the safety of its product, the tech giant guaranteed that all data collected via the "Recall" tool will "stay locally on your PC" rather than go straight to its online cloud servers.
Users can also delete any recorded snapshots in the feature's timeline, filter apps and websites from being recorded, or disable the feature entirely.
Microsoft Rolls Out Upgrades for PC Built-In Copilot AI
The "Recall" function is only one of the multitude of features and improvements Microsoft is rolling out with the release of its new Copilot+ PCs operating system.
Among the new features will be a built-in image generator across multiple Microsoft apps including Paint and Screen Capture.
Microsoft also partnered with Adobe and several other graphics software companies to bring their creative suites to the platform.
Microsoft has earlier announced plans to introduce a dedicated keyboard key for Copilot AI, for the first time since the 1990s, as the tech giant fully embraced the technology across its products.
