George Lucas Says AI in Film is 'Inevitable' Amid Creative Concerns

"Star Wars" creator George Lucas shared that AI utilization in films is "inevitable" despite big concerns across the creative industry.

Lucas talked about the advancing AI technology's impact on filmmaking and his thoughts on the future of cinema during an interview with Brut FR at the Cannes Film Festival.

George Lucas Details Stand on AI in Filmmaking

During a 10-minute interview, Lucas explained how his view on AI is connected to the company he founded years ago, Industrial Light and Magic (ILM). The ILM is known for pioneering cinematic technology by bringing innovative solutions to visual effects.

"It's inevitable. I mean, it's like saying, 'I don't believe these cars are gonna work. Let's just stick with the horses. Let's stick with the horses.' And yeah, you can say that, but that isn't the way the world works," Lucas answered when asked about AI.

Lucas founded ILM and was known for paving the era of digital technology in filmmaking. The "Star Wars" franchise became the standard of the VFX industry from the moment the first movie was released 50 years ago.

AI Continues as Sensitive Topic in Creative Industry

Regardless of Lucas' standpoint, AI is still considered a sensitive topic. Last year, the actors' and writers' strikes with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA made a point about the threats of AI.

Several productions have been gradually using AI in their projects. Businesses are now finding new ways to adopt AI ethically instead of fighting against the advancing technology. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA also negotiated key protections against the technology.

Outside filmmaking, some video game companies are looking at AI as a revolutionary way to bring more experiences to audiences. However, the technology still needs some regulation and must acknowledge the ethical issues surrounding it.
