It’s Pride Month! Here’s How You Can Show Your Support on Social Media

It has been a long and hard road for the LGBTQIA+ community, but they are slowly getting the recognition they deserve, so much so that they have a whole month dedicated to them. If you want to show your support on social media, here are simple ways you can do so.

Share Educational Content

Even if the voice of the community has become louder and more heard, you'd be surprised how many people have yet to learn how there are several other sexualities than what they grew up with. Even if others do know, they don't quite understand it fully just yet.

Sure, you will encounter people who will choose to stick to what they know, but you'll find others who are willing to learn and respect how people identify themselves. You can share infographic posts, short videos, interesting facts, or anything else that could help.

Post About LGBTQIA+ Heroes

The community didn't get to where they are now without a few sacrifices, and it hasn't been easy to just exist either. People can be cruel, but that doesn't keep certain individuals from fighting for recognition and rights, as well as being open about who they are.

Take James Baldwin, for example. He was an author based in New York and published a novel whose main character was a gay man. Mind you, this was in the early 50s, which means that being gay and also being Black must not have been easy for Baldwin, but he persisted.

Publish a Personal Message

Nothing says support like saying your piece about supporting the members of the LGBTQIA+ group, and you can do so on social media so that all your friends and followers can see it. Of course, you have to keep it clean when you do.

If you are going to write something, make sure it's in appreciation to those who belong to the community, as well as admiration for their efforts and their strength. Try to avoid posts that might antagonize other groups who are against the LGBTQIA+ community as it will only serve as a step back.

Correct Harmful Stereotypes

Since some do not fully understand how sexual orientation or identities work, they sometimes cling to stereotypes they have heard about or seen in media. While there are more and more titles that welcome representation, they won't be enough to eradicate outdated knowledge.

Stereotypes you can correct include people claiming that individuals cannot be lesbians since they still dress feminine, or a guy cannot be gay because they are built like a lumberjack. Accepting that how one looks does not always define who they are can help others put things into perspective.

Host a Q&A

This one is a little more out there, and you will need extensive or at least dependable knowledge about the topic. It is important to understand that hosting a Q&A will not be easy. You will get simple enough questions, but some might be more complex than you would like.

If you have friends who are within the celebrated community, you can try to ask them about the best or appropriate response to questions you're not sure how to answer. It's either that or you can do your own research and you will have learned something new as well.
