Even though the game is still a work in progress, the extended gameplay walkthrough already shows the kind of graphics and fighting mechanics we'll be seeing in the release. It also shows how the upcoming Assassin's Creed game offers more options for the player in terms of playstyle.
Assassins Creed Shadows: Play as Yasuke or Naoe
It's not the first time that Ubisoft gave players the option to play as two characters in the entirety of the game. In Assassin's Creed Syndicate, you can either play as Jacob Frye or Evie Frye, both of which have a slight difference in combat styles.
This time, however, there is a much more noticeable difference between the two playable characters in Assassin's Creed Shadows. Namely Yasuke the African samurai, and Naoe the shinobi, the former prefers more of an upfront fight while the latter excels in stealth.
As you might already know, the game is set in feudal Japan wherein the player will be tasked with ridding Japan of corruption. How that will be done will depend on the playable character you choose, although the players won't be able to swap when in the middle of missions.
Of course, there will be plenty of opportunity to try playing as Yasuke and Naoe seeing as the game will have a big map. It won't be as big as Valhalla's, but it will show changes in season between winter, spring, summer, and fall, as per Kotaku.
Naoe Playthrough
In order to remain hidden, Naoe will be using familiar assassin tactics like walking through roofs and performing killing strikes from above. She does this as she navigates through buildings with a grappling hook and drops on unsuspecting guards.
In the spirit of stealth, she can move through the grass and stay hidden behind objects to avoid detection. She would even have tools for distraction so that she may assassinate guards while they are preoccupied.
She will also have a few kunai to kill enemies from afar. In short, she will be more similar to the assassins from older games, where they stick to the shadows to accomplish their task. It matches perfectly with the tactics of a shinobi or ninja.
Yasuke Playthrough
The African samurai can be chosen by those who want a more action-packed approach to their goal as the fighter is built to trample enemies. As seen in his playthrough, he can switch between weapons from blunt to bladed, which can be done through the D-Pad.
Yasuke is strong enough to be able to lift enemies in the air after they have been impaled with the katana. His tank build allows him to run through thin walls as well, which further proves that Yasuke is built to withstand a more upfront attack.
In a way, he is closer to the characters in more recent games like Odyssey and Valhalla, where the playable characters may execute their in stealth but are more than capable of barging in with weapons in hand.
