We are getting an abundance of adaptions from both books and video games, and they won't be stopping any time soon. MGM+ caught itself a good story to adapt, particularly "The Institute" written by the renowned author, Stephen King.
MGM+'s 'The Institute' Adaptation
Stephen King is a well-known name in the book industry for his horror novels, many of which have already been adapted into popular titles. His work has been praised by many generations and MGM+ had the right idea of bringing another one to the small screen.
"The Institute" tells the story of a 12-year-old boy named Luke Ellis who has telepathic and telekinetic abilities. Befitting King's narratives, he and other children like him have been kidnapped and held in a clandestine facility.
Located deep in the Maine woods, the powers of the extraordinary children are being exploited. Of course, it won't be a worthwhile story without another character who can change the fate of those who are wronged, enter former police Tim Jamieson.
The series will be eight episodes long, as reported by Engadget, although it's still unknown how long each episode will last. Hopefully, it will be longer than expected so the show can cover most of the book's content.
There are already actors cast in the show as well. So far, it will star Ben Barnes as Tim Jamieson, who has become popular for his role as Prince Caspian in the "Narnia" franchise as well as The Darkling in "Shadow and Bone."
The role of the main antagonist, Julia Sigsby, will be played by Mary-Louise Parker. She took on the lead role in the dark comedy-drama "Weeds" along and was cast in various films like the "Red" franchise and "R.I.P.D."
Stephen King Adaptations
There are a number of films you can watch while waiting for the series, considering that there have already been several adaptations over the years. Arguably the most popular one is "The Shining" starring Jack Nicholson.
Playing the role of Jack Torrance, he takes the job as a winter caretaker for the Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. As time goes by, the hotel starts to take a toll on Jack's mental health, as well as give his son, Danny, horrendous visions.
The story continues on to another movie, "Doctor Sleep," which now follows an adult Danny who wants nothing to do with his abilities. However, he is forced to open up his past them so to save a girl who also has the "shining," and is being hunted by those who aim to consume it.
Those are just two of the extensive list of films you can watch based on King's novels. If you want a more recent film, you can watch "Firestarter" starring Zac Efron as Andy, who also has telepathic abilities.
The movie follows a young girl named Charlie who has abilities like her father, but unlike him, hers are more destructive. As the title suggests, she can set things ablaze., and that's on top of other things she is already capable of.
