xAI Taps Dell, Super Micro for Server Racks

In an X post, Musk confirmed that Dell will assemble half of the server racks used for the supercomputer that xAI is building. Super Micro Computer will do the latter part.

Michael Dell, CEO of Dell, also shared a sneak peek of the Dell AI factory wherein several server racks are already prepared for assembling. The racks are also in partnership with NVIDIA and will be used to power xAI's chatbot, Grok.

Both Dell and Super Micro have close ties with NVIDIA, establishing a good source of resources for Musk's startup AI company. Super Micro also supports the liquid-cooling technology that is initiated by NVIDIA.

xAI Plans to Upgrade Grok With Supercomputer

Musk previously announced to investors that xAI is working to build a supercomputer that will power the next version of its AI chatbot, Grok. However, training AI models to power Grok will require thousands of chips which are running low in supply.

The Grok 2 model utilized around 20,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs as reported by Musk. This means that the Grok 3 model and all upgraded models in the future would require about 100,000 or more NVIDIA H100 chips.

The xAI founder aims to start the operations of the supercomputer by the fall of 2025, according to reports. The supercomputer factory is reportedly being contracted in Memphis, Tennessee after several people spotted Musk visiting the area.
