There have been a few microblogging and other social networking sites emerging that had promising futures, but it seems like X and Threads are still the preferred platforms. Another one is going up there with the popular sites, and it might actually have real potential.
Noplace Hits No. 1 on the App Store
New apps climbing up the trend ladder aren't new, and it's not something you can base the overall success of an app from. However, looking at "noplace," there is potential in the app especially since it possesses features that other mainstream sites are lacking.
Just like the basic functions of other social media platforms, it was created so people can connect with their friends and other people based on shared interests. As pointed out by Tech Crunch, it looks like a mix between MySpace and the old Twitter.
The apps we are used to now are not too customizable any more. Every profile looks the same apart from the profile photo, bio, and cover photo. The new app noplace is bringing back such features that allow users to make their profile designs reflect who they are.
For instance, they could customize the color of their page as well as share details about them like age, date of birth, interests, relationship status, and more in their bio. They can also share their current interests when it comes to movies, books, music, games, food, and more.
In a way, it kind of looks like a profile from a dating app where the surface information about a person is readily available. The app makes it easy to find people with the same interests and even has a messaging feature to converse with friends.
Founder and CEO of noplace, Tiffany Zhong expressed that the "magical, fun part of the internet" is gone now and that everything is uniform. "Everything is just media. It feels very disconnected," she added.
The app even has a section for "top 10 friends," which for those who never got to experience MySpace, is a familiar feature. It has two feeds users can scroll through. One is exclusive to friends and the other is for updates from people around the world.
The team behind the app is also careful when it comes to moderation. Users under 18 will see more moderated content, and even for those older than 18, the company will still make sure that all users are safe.
Other Alternatives
There are tons of other alternatives to X and Threads if they are not to your liking. Mastodon, for instance, has been around for a while, and it's not a centralized platform like its main competitors, meaning that you can host your own community if you want to.
You may also try Blue Sky, which functions the same way as Twitter, You can share photos and short texts, as well as share other people's posts. The decentralized social media app was founded by Jack Dorsey, who in case you don't know, is also the founder of Twitter.
