Is this the HTC-made Nexus 8, set to debut next month at Google I/O?

Google is set to hold its annual Google I/O developer conference next month and the company is widely expected to unveil new devices, including the much-rumored Nexus 8.

The rumored Nexus 8 tablet is expected to come from HTC, and may launch to replace the widely popular Nexus 7 made by ASUS.

Despite lots of rumors and leaks, the purported Google Nexus 8 has been kept under tight wraps and not much is known regarding this upcoming device. Nevertheless, Google's event website now shows an image of an unknown tablet, which could be the rumored Nexus 8.

As you can see in the image above, the slate featured here looks quite different compared to the existing Nexus 7 models, and seems to fall in line with recent rumors. The Nexus 8 is expected to sport an 8.9-inch display, which would place it in direct competition with Apple's iPad Mini.

As PhoneArena points out, the device featured on Google's event website could very well be just a placeholder device. On the other hand, it wouldn't be the first time that someone spills the beans early and accidentally discloses information about upcoming devices ahead of time.

The device seen here seems to have quite thick bezels around its display, which further bolsters claims that LG will no longer be in charge of making the next Nexus tablet. All of LG's new tablets sport thin bezels around the display and this slate doesn't look like an LG device.

In terms of hardware specifications, the purported Nexus 8 is rumored to feature the latest components available on the market, and may also boast a high-resolution WQHD display. Google has so far offered its Nexus devices at very affordable prices compared to what they have to offer, but PhoneArena now claims that the Nexus 8 may come with premium pricing.

Furthermore, the Nexus 8 could also launch as the last device in Google's popular Nexus lineup of devices, as the company is rumored to ditch this program in favor of the Android Silver Project. The first device in this new project will reportedly be an LG smartphone with a Qualcomm MSM8994 chipset, reportedly with an octa-core configuration and support for 64-bit architecture.

The much-rumored Google Nexus 8 tablet is expected to launch sometime in the third quarter of this year. The Google I/O 2014 conference would be the perfect venue for unveiling, but it remains to be seen whether Google will indeed introduce its new Nexus 8 tablet next month.
