Etsy Repositions Company With New Policies

Etsy is a popular platform among craft makers and artisans where they can sell their niche products while reaching a huge audience. However, the platform has been suffering from issues from resellers, mixing the platform's initial premise.

Josh Silverman, Etsy CEO, announced that the company is overhauling its policies so that consumers and sellers can distinguish what belongs to the platform.

"We're positioning ourselves to answer the call for original goods and real people by dialing up the things that make Etsy, Etsy," Silverman said.

The four new classifications include "made by," "designed by," "handpicked by," and "sourced by." All products must fall under one of the categories to be eligible for selling on the platform.

Etsy Emphasizes 'Human Touch' on New Campaign

The new classifications will be the backbone of Etsy. For instance, vintage items are classified under "handpicked by," while crafting supplies are under "sourced by."

The "Made by" category accepts anything handmade like a vase, while, original illustrations are filed under "designed by," All the tags will be visible on each product listing to help consumers.

Silverman announced that Etsy will be focused on maintaining consistency on the platform by supporting items that are "infused with human touch."

The company also aims to set itself different from other leading e-commerce players like Amazon, Temu, and Shein which are filled by resellers and general items. Etsy will continue promoting unique items that are originally made by sellers or selected by a curator.
