Controller for FPS Games: 4 Pros, 4 Cons

FPS or first-person shooter games are among the most challenging especially if you are playing against other gamers. You'll need precision and the right tactics to survive and win. Even the platform you play on will play a huge part, so is it worth it to play using a controller?

Pros:

1. You can play in a relaxed position. Unlike playing on a PC, you can sit or even lie down however you like as long as you can see the screen, which can be a huge advantage for people who may not be able to sit on a computer chair for long. It might not be good for your back, but it sure will be more comfortable.

2. Some games come with aim assist. Game developers know well enough that mouse and keyboard users have an edge when it comes to FPS games, which is why aim assist is an added feature when it's ported to consoles. Even without crossplay, it would make the game a lot easier to play, especially for newbies.

3. It provides better handling. Unlike a keyboard and mouse where your buttons are far apart from each other, a controller has everything you could need in a small and compact device. They are also built for better grip, so you're less likely to feel strain on your wrists as you play, which is beneficial for players who play for hours at a time.

4. You can play on a bigger screen. You can play using a controller on your PC, but if you're playing on a console, then you have the option to play on a bigger screen. It would be easier to set up and you won't have to tweak a few settings before getting a decent display. You'll be able to appreciate the game more and see the small details you might miss on a monitor.

Cons:

1. You'll be at a disadvantage with turning speed. Unlike a mouse, your controller's turning speed is fixed, so in crossplay, you'll probably lose to someone playing with a mouse since they can immediately flick their aim. Even with aim assist, the speed at which you point to a target would still be a determining factor as to who wins in a shoot-off.

2. It lacks the precision that a mouse offers. Even without the turning speed causing problems, you'll also have a harder time pointing at a target since precision is much harder in controllers, especially if aim assist is disabled. You'll need to get used to the movement of the crosshair when you use the analog stick, which can take some time.

3. Text chats will be harder. With a keyboard, you can easily communicate with your teammates through texts. With a controller, it'll take you much longer since you only have access to arrow keys to select each letter. You might have to rely on voice chat, and some players don't like talking to strangers even in games.

4. There are fewer key customization options. There are many buttons on the keyboard you can assign to certain actions, allowing you to customize your controls based on what you're used to or comfortable with. Controllers only offer up to 12 buttons, excluding the analog stick for turns and movement.
