X Explores 'Dislike' Button Similar to Reddit's Downvote Feature

X is reportedly continuing the development of a button that could help rank the relevance of replies, a similar feature that Reddit uses.

The company has yet to officially announce its plans but initial reports have shown that it could function more as a "dislike" button.

X Could Release a Broken Heart Icon for Dislikes

Before X's acquisition and revamping, the company had already tested downvoting to all the posts on the platform. However, the experiment did not materialize until Elon Musk's recent plans.

Code references in the iOS app revealed that X plans to introduce a broken heart icon opposite to the existing heart-shaped "like" button. The company would also debut the feature to replies only; a contrast to Twitter's initial plan.

The idea of the dislike button is to move upwards replies that are considered by other users as a significant reply to the post. It would also prevent hate posts from generating more engagement on the platform through dislikes.

X Hides Likes on Public View

Last May, the social media platform decided to hide the "likes" section of all users. Several company employees shared that the decision was made to incentivize engagement, allowing users to protect their public image based on their "likes."

Users can still see who liked their posts and the number of people who liked the posts, replies, and such. However, users are not allowed to see if a person liked someone else's posts, along with their Liked tab.

The function also decreases the chances of snooping around other people's profiles by eliminating the ability to browse through other people's interests on their profiles.

X also improved Bookmarks as an alternative for users who may want to save posts as a future reference.
