Researchers Say Malware Can Now Be Found in eBook Torrents

When people say that the internet is a dangerous place, they aren't kidding. If you're not careful, your device can get infected by malware just by downloading files or clicking on a link. Hackers have expanded their methods by disguising malicious software through eBooks as well.

eBook Torrents Could Contain Malware

Even official websites or stores are not safe from bad actors trying to get people to download malware. Google Play, for instance, has already taken down several apps that were infected, so you can only imagine how bad it is for a risky torrent site.

Usually, hackers tend to disguise malware as movies or shows since it's among the most downloaded pirated content online. At this point, it's only a matter of time before you download malware if you opt for torrents often.

Even readers are not safe from bad actors anymore. Trellix cybersecurity researchers have found that hackers are now hiding malware in eBook torrents as well. The malware in question is said to be called ViperSoftX, according to Tech Radar

Users would actually download the eBook they were meant to, but they wouldn't spot the hidden folder and a Windows shortcut file. Running it would trigger an infection chain, and the malware would then be deployed on the device.

ViperSoftX is created to steal information as well as provide remote access. Hackers will be able to discover your sensitive information like login credentials, financial information, and other personal data that you might have on your computer.

The latest version is already a new strain of malware as it has been updated and modified since it was discovered in 2019. It is now capable of stealing cryptocurrency wallet data from browser extensions, along with clipboard content for potential passwords.

Researchers added that by utilizing Common Language Runtime, the malware can execute its functions while evading detection, which means that you won't find out about it until you randomly do a malware scan or when it's too late.

How to Avoid Getting Malware from eBooks

For starters, you should refrain from downloading files through torrent sites. None of the websites are regulated seeing as they are illegal, and so it's a playground for hackers who know that countless people rely on free downloads.

If you have tried torrenting before, you know that there are a lot of buttons you can click to download the file, but only one of them actually works. While most are just meant to redirect you to ads, some lead to you downloading malware instead.

When you absolutely have to download through a torrent site for some reason, you should at least have a strong antivirus software that blocks downloads if it detects malware. Operating systems such as Windows 11 already have a built-in antivirus, but you'll have to keep it up to date.

In the event that you still manage to get infected by malware, immediately run a sweep and remove the malware from your device. Change your passwords so the hacker won't be able to use your old passwords.
