Google is apparently teasing the next version of its popular mobile OS, Android 5.0, if a new social media post from the company is any indication.
The highly-anticipated Google I/O 2014 conference is set to take place later this month, starting on June 25, and the company is expected to make some exciting announcements at the event.
Such announcements should cover both the software and the hardware fronts, and Google's official Twitter account is now seemingly teasing the software treat. A new image Google posted on Twitter now shows what may be a hint for the next Android 5.0 OS version, which should debut at the I/O 2014.
Alongside the new OS, Google is also widely expected to unveil a much-rumored Nexus 8 tablet, presumably made by HTC, but the possibility of a Nexus 6 smartphone cannot be ruled out either. Google traditionally releases new hardware as a launch vehicle for each new OS version, and a new Nexus device should definitely be in the cards.
Whether it's a phone or a tablet remains to be seen, but the new version of the OS is bound to come and Google is now offering a small glimpse into what to expect. So far the upcoming version of Android has been referred to as v4.5, but the newly-posted image suggests that it may actually be called Android 5.0.
As Reddit user "thatdudefromthehood" points out, the devices shown in Google's latest image display the time as 5:00. Images previously released in a similar fashion from the Android account displayed the time as 4:40, alluding to Android 4.4 KitKat.
Currently no information is available regarding what the new Android 5.0 may actually be called. Some reports suggested that it may launch as Android Lollipop, keeping up with Google's habit of naming its OS versions after sweets, in alphabetical order. On the other hand, the current Android version was rumored to be called Key Lime Pie before it became official, but Google teamed up with Nestle and launched Android KitKat instead.
It's tough to determine for certain at this point, but everything should become clear very soon, as the Google I/O 2014 conference is just around the corner.
