Sony's rumored mid-range smartphone with water-resistant capabilities may be an Xperia M2 model called the Xperia M2 Aqua, which was just spotted at the FCC.
The latest devices from Sony have come with special certification for dust- and water resistance, but they cater to the high end segment of the market. Rumors of a water-resistant Sony smartphone that would fall into the mid-range category have been making rounds for quite some time, but nothing materialized so far. That may well change soon, as new information now suggests that a Sony Xperia M2 Aqua may be making its debut soon.
The device has recently passed through the FCC and was reportedly spotted on the company's website (XML) as well, sporting model numbers PM-0770 and PM-0771. According to a new PhoneArena report, the two model numbers refer to the same device, i.e. the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua, but with different sets of LTE bands. This means that the Xperia M2 Aqua should make a global debut. Aside from 4G LTE, connectivity options also include Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, ANT+, NFC, and GPS, the FCC documents (1, 2) further reveal.
The upcoming Xperia M2 Aqua will likely be very similar to the original Xperia M2 unveiled earlier this year, save for its water resistant capabilities. The two handsets have similar dimensions and will likely sport the same design as well. The specifications of the Xperia M2 Aqua are also expected to be identical to those of the original Xperia M2.
As a reminder, the Sony Xperia M2 sports a 4.8-inch qHD TFT LCD display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage capacity. Other specs include an 8-megapixel rear camera, a VGA front shooter, and a 2,300 mAh battery. On the software side, the Xperia M2 runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.
The Sony Xperia M2 launched in a dual-SIM variant as well, but the Xperia M2 Aqua model will likely have only single-SIM support. The FCC documents suggest an imminent release, but no additional information is available at this point. We'll make sure to keep you up to date as soon as more details surface regarding this Xperia M2 Aqua, so stay tuned.
