According to very early analytics data regarding Apple's newly-released iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the 4.7-inch model is apparently outselling the 5.5-inch variant by a wide margin.
The new iPhones have barely been out on the market, as they just made their commercial debut on Friday, Sept. 19. Nevertheless, reports are already piling up regarding their demand, adoption, success, reactions stirred, etc.
As TechCrunch first noticed, mobile analytics company MixPanel has already released early data about the new iPhones' adoption, revealing that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 may be more popular. According to the MixPanel report, the smaller iPhone 6 seems to be outperforming the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, and by quite a wide margin too.
At the time of writing, the graph shows that iPhone 6 adoption rates peaked at 3.60% while the iPhone 6 Plus stood at 0.49 percent at 4:00 a.m. UTC on Saturday, Sept. 20 (see image above).
So far, the general belief based on pre-order demand and shortage in supply was that the larger iPhone 6 Plus was in greater demand. The early data from MixPanel now shows otherwise, putting the smaller iPhone 6 on top.
On the other hand, this early data doesn't necessarily mean that the iPhone 6 is actually outselling the iPhone 6 Plus. The data is based on deliveries and activations, and there's a big chance that many of the iPhone 6 Plus units that have been pre-ordered or sold were not yet available for delivery.
With so many reports and evidence of limited iPhone 6 Plus supplies both online and in retail stores, as soon as pre-orders kicked off, the second theory makes sense.
Pre-order demand for the iPhone 6 Plus has been high and shipping dates have slipped, while the iPhone 6 appeared to be in strong supply and ready to ship on time. Delivery delays for the iPhone 6 Plus would automatically affect MixPanel's survey, revealing greater adoption rates for the smaller iPhone 6.
It will be interesting to watch how the data will change over the next few weeks, as the iPhone 6 Plus will make its way to more customers. For now, you can check out the chart, which has hourly updates, on MixPanel's website at this link.
