Next Google Glass to pack Intel inside?

The next version of the Google Glass wearable gadget may come with Intel power under the hood, if a new report turns out to be accurate.

Google Glass has stirred plenty of interest since its debut, as well as plenty of controversy. Rumor has it that Google is now working on a second-generation Google Glass product, and the new iteration may boast Intel processing power. This would allow Intel to make a foray into the growing wearable device market, while making Google Glass more attractive to a wider audience.

It's worth pointing out, however, that Google has not announced any plans in this regards and has not confirmed a collaboration with Intel for the next Google Glass. Nevertheless, the information comes from a credible source and could turn out to be accurate.

More specifically, the news comes from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), which cites people familiar with Google's plans.

"Intel Corp. will supply the electronic brains for a new version of Google Inc.'s Glass device expected next year, people familiar with the matter said, part of a push by the semiconductor giant into the wearable technology," the WSJ reports.

"An Intel chip will replace a processor from Texas Instruments Inc. included in the first version of Glass, the people said. Intel plans to promote Glass to companies such as hospital networks and manufacturers, while developing new workplace uses for the device, according to one of the people."

So far, Google Glass (pictured above) has not exactly been the most successful device out there, but a new model with Intel inside could help it gain more traction. The current Google Glass is now available to anyone in the U.S., but comes with a hefty price tag of $1,500. At the same time, the device has rather limited developer support, at least when compared to other devices and platforms.

It remains to be seen whether a new iteration will be able to turn things around and be more successful, but it's all in the rumor state for now. No details are yet available regarding what the next version of Google Glass will look like, nor what other specs and functionality it will have to bring to the table.

We'll make sure to keep you up to date as soon as we learn more on the matter, but take everything with a grain of salt in the meantime.
