Virgin Mobile is now offering new contract-free data sharing plans for families, with prices starting at $65 per month for two lines.
The prepaid market has been gaining momentum as of late and continues to grow, with increasingly more customers now preferring prepaid options rather than committing to lengthy contracts.
Virgin Mobile may not be the preferred carrier in the U.S., but it does have some attractive options for those who want prepaid plans at decent price points, indirectly riding on Sprint's network.
As previously mentioned, the starting price for Virgin's new contract-free data sharing plans for families is $65, and for that price customers will get unlimited talk, text, and 4GB of 4G LTE data spread across two lines. The next tier goes up to $90 per month, which increases the data amount to 8GB split across three lines, translating to $30 per line. Lastly, the top option costs $115 per month, and boosts the amount of data to 12GB, split between four lines.
In other words, these plans would amount to a starting price of $28.75 per person/line before taxes and other fees, and customers who go for these shared plans would be able to split the included amount of data however they want between all people under said plan.
Virgin touts that its latest plans are "the industry's first no-contract data sharing plans," and notes that they are exclusively available through Walmart.
"Beginning Saturday, Jan. 17, the new plans are available on four specific 4G LTE smartphones pre-loaded with the Virgin Mobile data-sharing application, which provides data buy-ups and international add-ons with one touch, directly from the device. Every multi-line plan will also come with a free Mobile Hotspot feature, making it even easier to share data across Wi-Fi enabled devices," Virgin Mobile announced.
On the downside, Virgin Mobile doesn't exactly have the most exciting device lineup, at least not compared to the big four U.S. carriers. The new Unlimited and Data Share plans will be available on updated versions of the HTC Desire 510, LG Tribute, LG Volt, and Samsung Galaxy Core Prime. The carrier plans to add more devices by the end of February.
"At Virgin Mobile we are committed to offering prepaid customers innovative new wireless options," added Sprint Prepaid vice president Angela Rittgers. "We were the first prepaid carrier to offer texting keyboards and texting-only plans, first to help customers pay less for talk they weren't using, the first to feature a totally customized plan, and now the first data sharing plans. The new data sharing plans bring some of the most aggressive shared-line plans ever launched to Walmart."
