Samsung Galaxy S6, curved-display Galaxy S Edge leak in purported 3D render

An intriguing 3D render has surfaced online, purportedly showing the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 and S Edge smartphones ahead of their official debut.

Various reports so far have indicated that Samsung plans to unleash a curved-display Galaxy S Edge handset alongside the standard Galaxy S6 flagship, and the company itself hinted at a curved-display smartphone with its Galaxy Unpacked event invite.

As a reminder, Samsung recently confirmed it will be hosting a special Galaxy Unpacked 2015 event on March 1, and the teaser image showed the shadowy profile of a curvy device. The general belief is that the handset teased in that image is the upcoming Galaxy S Edge.

A new image has now leaked online further bolstering that claim, as CNET Korea has obtained what looks like a 3D render of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S Edge. The image reportedly comes from "sources at a South Korean electronics distributor," showing five purported variants of the two smartphones.

The first three handsets seen in the image above apparently show the standard Galaxy S6, while the fourth and fifth show the curved-display Galaxy S Edge. The second phone in the image is allegedly a Galaxy S6 wrapped in a protective cover from Verus, one of the top smartphone case makers in South Korea.

The fourth and the fifth smartphones in the image, meanwhile, are reminiscent of the curved display found on the Galaxy Note Edge, which falls in line with previous rumors of a dual-edged Galaxy S Edge smartphone. More specifically, the fourth handset here shows the display edged on the right side, while the fifth smartphone appears to be edged on the left side (the smartphone is upside down in the image). This indicates that the smartphone will either have its display curved on both sides, or come in two variants curved on one side or the other, for right- and left-handed people.

Lastly, the fifth smartphone shown in this image also appears to have a metallic frame, which would fall in line with the shadowy profile of the smartphone teased on Samsung's event invite.

Moreover, a source told ZDNet Korea that smartphone cover makers in South Korea are already mass producing cases for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S Edge based on the smartphones themselves, as well as metal molds Samsung provided. Lastly, sources inside Samsung have also told the publication that the Galaxy S Edge will have symmetrical edged sides and will use aluminum in its build.

With nothing officially confirmed, however, make sure to take all leaks and reports with a hefty grain of salt. The rumor mill is always going into overdrive ahead of big product releases, but it's all just speculation until the formal unveiling on March 1.
