Apple may reportedly stick to an 8-megapixel rear camera for its next-generation iPhone as well, according to a new report.
While other smartphone makers have gradually improved the cameras on their handsets by adding more megapixels, Apple has notoriously stayed away from the megapixel race. The iMaker instead chose to improve the image quality through other means without adding more megapixels, and may continue to do so.
The next-generation iPhone, informally dubbed the iPhone 6S, recently starred in some intriguing rumors claiming that it would boast some big changes in the camera department. A new two-lens system was rumored, as well as a higher megapixel count. According to a new report, however, Apple's next iPhone may still feature an 8-megapixel shooter.
The purported iPhone 6S should sport some improvements in the camera department, but those will likely not be related to megapixels, according to Jeff Pu, an analyst with Yuanta Securities Investment Consulting Co.
The analyst expects the next-generation iPhone to come with the same 8-megapixel count as the current iPhone 6 model, the Taipei Times reported (via Apple Insider).
Instead, Apple may choose to make improvements in the camera department by focusing more on features such as optical image stabilization (OIS) and faster autofocus rather than more megapixels. The analyst further noted that module makers would have more to benefit from such an approach than lens makers.
Previous rumors, meanwhile, also indicated that Apple's next-generation smartphone would come with optical zoom capabilities, which would be a first for an iPhone.
The latest report, however, made no mention of the purported duo-lens camera system and its alleged features. At the same time, it's all in the rumor state at this point, as any information currently available regarding the next-generation iPhone is based solely on rumors and speculation.
Apple typically unveils new iPhone iterations in the fall each year, which means that it's quite early to have a good grasp of what's to come. The iPhone 6S, or whatever it will be called, should sport some notable improvements on all fronts compared to its predecessor, but it remains to be seen just what will be in the cards. As always with unconfirmed rumors and reports, make sure to take everything with a grain of salt. We'll keep you posted as soon as more information becomes available, so stay tuned.
