Next-gen Google Nexus smartphone to come from LG?

An intriguing report out of Korea claims to have some information on the next-generation Nexus smartphone, and LG will reportedly be the manufacturer.

The Nexus lineup has proved to be widely popular so far because it consists of devices with good specifications, affordable price tags, and the much-touted Nexus experience that puts them the first in line whenever a new version of Android is ready to roll out.

Google teams up with various manufacturers for its Nexus devices, which adds a nice touch of diversity. So far, HTC handled the very first Nexus smartphone, Samsung made the next two, LG made the two handsets after that, and the latest Nexus 6 comes from Motorola.

Recent rumors have suggested that Google is gearing up to launch a new Nexus smartphone later this year, and pointed at Huawei as the manufacturer. A new Korean report (via GforGames), however, now claims that Google will return to LG for its next-generation Nexus smartphone.

According to the report in question, Google's engineers visited LG's headquarters earlier this week, on March 16, to take a tour of its facilities. During their stay in Korea, the respective engineers reportedly plan to visit LG's various affiliates as well, including LG Innotek and LG Display.

This suggests that Google is looking to renew its partnership with LG and collaborate with the OEM for the Nexus 7, or whatever it may be called. So far, LG made the widely successful Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 (pictured above).

The report also claims that industry insiders believe that these meetings between Google and LG indeed refer to the next-generation Nexus smartphone. On the other hand, Google's visit to LG's headquarters could also be related to other upcoming devices, such as smartwatches and other.

It remains to be seen whether this will materialize in a renewed collaboration between Google and LG for a new Nexus smartphone, as it's all still in the rumor state at this point. Considering the success of previous LG Nexus smartphones, a new handset sounds promising. Until some official information, however, it's highly recommended to take everything with a grain of salt. We'll keep you up to date as soon as more information becomes available, so stay tuned.
