Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer has joined forces with Intel and Google to launch an upcoming smartwatch with Intel inside and Android Wear.
With the Apple Watch commercial release just around the corner, the wearable market is now heating up even further with this newly-announced partnership between three powerful companies. Tag Heuer, Intel, and Google will each lend their respective expertise in luxury watchmaking, hardware, and software, collaborating to create a high-end wearable.
Executives from the three companies took the stage at Baselworld, Switzerland, on Thursday, March 19, to announce the exciting new partnership. Together, Tag Heuer, Intel, and Google plan to develop a wearable device that is both luxurious and with smart capabilities for seamless connection.
"Swiss watchmaking and Silicon Valley is a marriage of technological innovation with watchmaking credibility. Our collaboration provides a rich host of synergies, forming a win-win partnership, and the potential for our three companies is enormous," said Jean-Claude Biver, President of the Watch Division LVMH Group and CEO of TAG Heuer.
"The quality of Swiss watches is renowned worldwide. When this is allied with the creative technology and global power of two companies like Intel and Google, using the Android Wear platform and based on Intel technology, we can see the launch of a technological revolution in our industry, of which I am proud to be a pioneer today with a TAG Heuer," added Guy Sémon, General Manager of TAG Heuer.
"By fusing beauty with technology, the Swiss watch has inspired generations of artists and engineers alike - including us at Google. So we're thrilled to be working with TAG Heuer and Intel to bring a unique blend of emotion and innovation to the luxury market. Together, and using the Android Wear platform, we can imagine a better, beautiful, smarter watch," further touted David Singleton, Director of Engineering for Android Wear.
The companies did not offer any details on specifications or other information at this point, and it also remains unclear for now just when the smartwatch will be ready to make its debut. Nevertheless, the gadget will likely challenge the Apple Watch to the core when it does hit the market. In the meantime, check out the video below to learn more about this collaborative effort.
