Android M to focus on battery performance, RAM usage, debut at Google I/O 2015

Google's upcoming Android M OS version will reportedly focus mostly on battery performance and RAM management, if a new report turns out to be accurate.

The last major version of Google's popular mobile operating system, Android 5.0 Lollipop, focused on visual changes and design elements for a more aesthetically pleasing performance. Google is now expected to announce the next version of its OS soon, presumably revealing Android M at its I/O 2015 developer conference.

With just a couple of days to go until Google I/O 2015 kicks off on Thursday, May 28, the rumor mill is going into overdrive as usual, trying to anticipate what's to come. Google is expected to announce its new Android M as a developer preview at the conference, just like it did with Android L (later launched as Lollipop) last year. The final version of Android M should be ready by August, and should have an official name and at least one Nexus device as its launch vehicle by October.

Leaks and reports regarding Google's next-gen Android M OS version have been intensifying as of late, and more information has now come to light. According to a new report from Android Police, Google will focus on battery performance and better RAM management with its new Android M.

Google has reportedly requested its teams to emphasize on battery optimization and reducing RAM usage in order to provide a better experience.

"Google is apparently urging its own teams to focus on battery performance by cutting location checkins when possible, trimming down RAM usage, and reducing activity off-charger and when the device's screen is off. Presumably this renewed focus on performance will extend to Google's own Play Services package, which frequently manages to wiggle its way to the top of battery usage stats," explains the report.

Android Police further suggests that Android M is called Macadamia Nut Cookie or MNC internally, but the name will be different once the OS is ready for public consumption. Android L was also reportedly called Lemon Meringue Pie (LMP) internally, and ultimately it launched as Lollipop.

It's all in the rumor state for now, but if Google does indeed plan to announce the next version of its OS at the I/O developer conference later this week, more information will soon come to light. Until an official announcement, however, make sure to take all rumors, leaks and reports with a grain of salt.
