Among the latest round of iPad product updates, the Apple SIM was one of the quieter parts. This is basically an internal SIM card from Apple that eliminates the previous need to switch out a card in order to access networks in the UK and U.S. including T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T, and EE.
With the new Apple SIM card all you have to do is to go into Settings and select the desired network. This feature is much more than a nice benefit, it is total game changer. With Apple SIM card, users can seamlessly access and cover networks across carriers in more than 90 countries.
In order to facilitate this expansion, Apple has partnered with GigSky. For users, as the company expands its own technology, this means that in the future there could actually be more coverage.
The SIM card switchover is seamless and straightforward. Upon return to the homeland to switch back to the local U.K. or U.S., carrier's plan will be easy as well. The device remains unlocked so you can choose a local SIM in case you find that might be the better choice.
All you have to do is to select a cellular data plan from your iPad and connect when you reach your destination. If you consider that as a better solution, you can choose to install a local carrier SIM, since iPad is an unlocked device.
Apple SIM card's pricing is also very affordable. The entry-level plans will cost you only $10 for a range of data. Depending on local costs, you can get, for example 10MB in New Guinea, or 75MB in Italy. There can be even some better deals in more mature markets. Another advantage is the fact that all plans are short-term, so no long-term engagements or contracts are limiting your flexibility.
For iPad owners who are frequent travelers, this is great news. They will no longer need to either rush immediately to a telecom store or keep a collection of SIM cards in order to secure a country-specific SIM card. Another advantage is that iPad users can enjoy the elimination of roaming charges in Europe since on the Apple list, there are also several European countries.
For the moment, this technology is only available for iPad 2 and iPad mini 3. We really hope that the Apple SIM card will also make it to Apple's flagship iPhone.
