While a 35 million unit sale sounds really impressive, Xiaomi is far behind founder Lei Jun's projected sales figures. The company announced a projected sale of 100 million Xiaomi phones on the first six months of the year.
The 35 million mark is just one-third of the figures announced by Lei Jun himself on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter. While still a remarkable 33% increase, the numbers raised doubts regarding the company's ability to score significantly in the global smartphone business.
The popular Chinese mobile maker's archrival, Apple, has reportedly sold over 60 million units in just three months, more than twice as those of Xiaomi's sales.
Xiaomi is reported to have its worth at least 46 billion dollars. It is a formidable company, being touted already as an important player in the smartphone industry. It is a feat for the five-year old company.
But unlike other major tech companies like Samsung or Apple, Xiaomi does not release details about its profits and revenues. Its position and performance in the international smartphone market is thus difficult to judge.
Apple listed its revenue at 58 billion dollars as of the first quarter of the year. Samsung, on the other hand, revealed a first quarter revenue amounting to 44 billion dollars. Xiaomi is said to be the top smartphone brand in its country of origin, China. Apart from the 35 million sold units, which Xiaomi confirmed, other figures have not been disclosed.
Besides China, Xiaomi has a considerably big market in India, where it has secured an investment from major company Tata and Sons. It has recently released the Xiaomi Redmi 2 in Brazil.
In Taiwan, the brand also claims to have surpassed Apple and Samsung sales. It has reportedly sold 10,000 phones in just one second.
The company has been actively pursuing an expansion in its international market. Asian countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines have been increasingly taking to the affordable phone brand.
