First LG OLED 4K Curved Screen TVs Is Going On Sale In Australia

LG is selling two new 4K OLDED TVs in Australia. The 55-inch and 65-inch TVs offer an impressive cocktail of curved screen, 4K, and OLED. Earlier this year the South Korean company released a 65 inch 4K TV featuring LG's proprietary ColorPrime technology. With the advent of 4K OLED TVs on the Australian market consumers will have a larger choice of high-quality displays.

LG announced its two new OLED TVs at an event held at the mansion of the late architect Harry Seidler. The two wide screen models are costing 5999AUD, and respectively 9999AUD. Up to date, the South Korean company has sold 6000 OLED TVs in Australia, but they all had lower screen resolutions than 4K.

While other early samples of OLED 4K TV's have been around for a while, for some time they were uneconomical to produce for commercial purposes due to a large failure rate during the manufacturing process. LG began working on OLED six years ago and the improvements in production management allow now the company to achieve a manufacturing yield rate between 80 to 85 percent. Any concerns about the longevity of OLED panels are unfounded, since in tests conducted by LG the screen life was more than 30,000 hours.

At of 3840x2160 pixels both EG960T models feature resolutions 4 times that of a full HD display. This is the first time when TVs featuring a combination of OLED displays and 4K resolution have been sold on the Australian market. LG doesn't plan at this stage to bring larger 4K OLED TVs to market.

Unlike conventional LED and LCD screens that require backlighting, OLED displays provide perfect black and vivid colors, since they consist of self-lighting pixels individually turned on and off. The two 4K OLED TV sets can display over 1 billion colors. Both 4K OLED TV models that will sell in Australia feature LG's web Smart TV platform OS 2.0, LG's popular magic remote control, Harman/Kardon sound, and have a six-step upscale in order to boost content closer to ultrahigh definition.

Initially, the two new LG TV models available on the Australian market will roll out at a select number of Harvey Norman retail stores. Toward year's end they will become more widely available. After South Korea, the UK, and US, Australia is the fourth market to get the new LG models. The LG's share of the Australian TV market had risen to 22.9 percent this year, from 19.8 percent last. The LG's share of the 4K market had risen to 30.5 percent, from 27.2 percent last year. By the end of the current year, 4K ultrahigh definition segment of the TV market is estimated to grow to 50 percent.
