Redmond Washington company, Microsoft, has named a 2-4 year timeframe of free upgrades and updates for Windows 10. Microsoft has written, on a slide presentation for investors late last month, that support for an operating system is determined by the lifetime of a particular device.
ComputerWorld said that the company's presentation has purportedly indicated a 2-4 year supported lifespan for Windows 10. The upgrades and updates for the new operating system include improved user interface and features. It can also be expected that updates will be frequent and regular.
"With the launch of Windows 10, Microsoft will provide new features and functionality over time. We will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device. We think of Windows as a Service -- continuous updates over time." A slide stated during the conference in June.
The lifespan of such support services remains unclear, but Microsoft has said that it will depend on the who the user is, and the lifetime of the device. This can mean that Microsoft is distinguishing among its users, grouping their use of Windows 10 according to purposes.
For example, a company upgrades its PCs to Windows 10. The purpose of the upgrade is business, and so the lifespan of a free upgrade may be lengthened or shortened accordingly. This may mean that the upgrade for Windows 10 Home may be available for a shorter length of time, whereas Pro, which caters to businesses, may have longer availability period.
"We will have a new revenue recognition model because Windows 10 will include software updates provided over time, rather than at specifically-priced software upgrade events, which will result in the deferral of revenue." Microsoft said regarding its new development.
No further clarifications have been divulged about the updates. It is still unclear whether the free Windows 10 upgrade will be available to which Windows users in particular, beginning in its release on July 29. Microsoft will have to keep its users informed, and its processes, explained.
