Berlin-the IFA event has just been getting started when some notable gadgets have taken the stage to be introduced by their respective companies. Camera maker Polaroid is one of the names in the gadget field to take the stage on Saturday, Sept 5. The company has introduced its newest device, the Polaroid Snap, an instant digital camera which does not need ink.
According to Pulse Headlines, the gadget contains a 10 MP digital camera that comes with an incorporated printer. The printer uses the Zero Ink Printing technology cultivated by ZINK. The size of the new camera is a plus for the device, as many snap-happy customers opt to go for portable cameras they can bring anywhere they go.
The Snap, designed by Ammunition, its third for Polaroid, is reasonably priced at $99. The gadget is not equipped with a zoom in feature. Its 2.8 lenses is fixed at a length for focus. The camera also does not have a screen, but it does have a viewfinder located on top of the device. Users of the Snap will also be able to use the 10-second timer, which comes with the photobooth mode. The camera also has a Micro SD of up to 32GB storage and can print and take photos simultaneously.
Although fewer and fewer people print their photos nowadays, Polaroid still attempts to establish a market for its instant cameras. The device is a snap and shoot camera, launched at a time when the gadgets market is dominated by smartphones which enable users to shoot photos and edit them on the spot. Robert Brunner, the president of Ammunition, admits that the idea of needing a device like the Snap is "going away".
Brunner, however, points out that while that may very well be the case, he believes that each device should have its own specialization and focus. "Those are the kind of things we're interested in, that go against the grain to this Swiss Army knife approach to technology." He said to Wired. Brunner has also iterated that before, photography was about aesthetic value and photos were a tangible memento. Now, they just make rounds, filtered and cropped, in social media.
The new Polaroid camera brings a dose of nostalgia to its would-be users. For those who'd like to capture some shots of good times and keep them, the size, price and even the good old features may be enough to give it a try.
